EMD SD70ACes[]

Technical Details[]

Real-Life History[]

The EMD SD70ACe was born out of necessity, with EPA Tier 2 regulations off in the distance EMD had to design a new locomotive to meet these standards. The SD70ACe and its variants have sold thousands of domestic and foreign units since 2004. The average SD70ACe was equipped with a Nathan K5LLA and a standard electronic or mechanical bell.

CSX purchased 20 pre-production SD70ACe's. These units were retired in 2017 and sold to Progress Rail. Union Pacific was the model's second customer, and now rosters 680+ units. BNSF rosters 650 SD70ACe's (20 of which are SD70ACe-P4's). Norfolk Southern, KCS, Montana Rail Link, and Arkansas & Missouri also roster SD70ACe's. EMD had a 30 unit SD70ACe order from CN, but the order has been cancelled. CN has since purchased four EMD SD70ACe-P6 units, still adorned in patched EMD demonstrator paint. Tacoma Rail began operating two SD70ACe-P4's leased from EMD in 2014. Some units on the BNSF were banned from leading freight trains, the so called "thundercabs" were banned from leading on the BNSF due to the fact it was extremely noisy, and excessive vibration. Crews described it as shaky and loud.[1]

Livery[]

The engine is painted dark green with the bottom white line on the nose, which rises up to be a strike through on the sides.

GE P40DC[]

Technical Details[]

Real-Life History[]

In 2007, New Jersey Transit had upgraded their P40DC units with updated prime movers to match the 4,250 horsepower (3,170 kW) of the successor P42DC. This was done by readjusting the position of the lay shafts within the prime mover.

Amtrak has returned 15 of their P40DC units to service as part of a project funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The first of the units were returned to service in March 2010 after being overhauled at the Beech Grove Shops. They were upgraded like NJT's units had been a few years before to have 4,250 hp (3,170 kW) and match the P42DC's maximum speed of 110 mph (177 km/h). They also received updated cab signaling systems. The upgraded locomotives still have mechanical air brakes, which makes them most suitable for trains that only require a single locomotive. This differs from the electronic air brakes on the P42DC and P32AC-DM. They also feature a builder's plate indicating that they were rebuilt under the auspices of the TIGER stimulus program.[2]
