The Railways of Crotoonia Wiki

There have been several engines both from and outside of the Island of Sodor that have appeared in the TV series, Thomas & Friends, and the book series, the Railway Series, but they don't have as much of a significant role in The Railways of Crotoonia.

Bear[]

Bear (originally known by his number, Diesel 7101) is a green (originally blue) mixed-traffic diesel engine From The Island of Sodor. His name comes from the growling noises his engine makes, which makes him sound like a bear.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

Bear is based on a British Rail (BR) Class 35 "Hymek" Bo-Bo. one-hundred and one members of this class were built from 1961 to 1964. They were known as "Hymeks" because of their Mekydro-design hydraulic transmission units. They were withdrawn between 1971 and 1975, a short life caused by British Railways designating diesel-hydraulic engines non-standard following the withdrawal of steam. Four "Hymeks" have been preserved by heritage railways, such as the East Lancashire Railway in North West England.

Bear's original number, 7101, is an in-joke: the Class 35s was only numbered up to 7100. As Beyer, Peacock and Company was the only company to build the Class 35, all were built in numerical order. Therefore it is safe to say Bear was built after D7100, who entered service on 5 February, 1964.

Livery[]

When he first arrived on Sodor, Bear was painted in the BR Rail Blue with yellow window surroundings livery. He also had yellow warning panels on his front and back end.

When he became part of the North Western Railway, Bear was painted in the BR Deep Bronze green with a narrow band of lime along the bottom of his sides and cream window surroundings livery. His yellow warning panels on his front and back end became smaller. His rooftop is painted grey. His number was painted on the sides of his cab in white (D7101) on his original livery and (D3) on his current livery.

Apperances[]

D5701[]

Diesel 5701 is a blue mixed-traffic diesel engine who works for British Railways.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

D5701 is based on the real British Rail (BR) Class 28 Co-Bo diesel-electric engine of the same number. The BR Class 28s were initially used on the "Condor" express freight services but the class's Crossley engines quickly proved problematic. They suffered frequent failures, and in 1961 the entire class was handed back to the manufacturer for remedial work on the engines, and to cure problems with cab windows falling out while running. Upon return to service in 1962, all members of the class were allocated to Barrow-in-Furness. The BR Class 28s were withdrawn and scrapped by the end of 1969 with only one engine, D5705, surviving preservation. BoCo is also a member of this class.

Livery[]

D5701 was painted in the BR Rail Blue livery. He has yellow warning panels on his front and back end. His rooftop was painted light grey. He was the only Class 28 to be painted in Rail Blue.

Dennis[]

Dennis is a lazy gray diesel who dislikes doing any work at all and would rather let other engines do it for him.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

Dennis is based on British Rail (BR) 11001, a prototype Bulleid diesel built at Ashford Works, England in 1949 and scrapped in 1959.

Norman is also based on BR 11001.

Livery[]

Dennis is painted two-tone grey with dark grey wheels, gearboxes, roof, running board and front. His number 11001 is painted on his sides in white, and his jackshaft is red.

Derek[]

Derek, also known as Paxman Diesel and The Paxman, is a large green diesel who is known for his initial "teething" troubles.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

Derek is based on a British Rail (BR) Class 17, also known as the Clayton Diesel-electric Type 1. 117 members of this class were built between 1962 and 1965. Derek's problems were undoubtedly inspired by those of his basis, as the twin Paxman engines of the real Class 17s were unreliable, being prone to problems with the camshaft, cylinder head and other areas. Because of these problems, all Class 17s were withdrawn by the end of 1971, after less than 10 years of service. One Class 17, D8568, is preserved at the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway in South Oxfordshire, England. According to David Maidment, Derek (then known as Paxman) was originally envisioned as a BR Class 14 (also known as the D95XX series, nicknamed "Teddy Bears") diesel-hydraulic locomotive. Fifty-six of these engines were built at Swindon Works between 1964 and 1965. Some of these engines worked as bankers at Ebbw Vale and had a tendency to run hot, leaving the Class 37 diesels to pull both the train and the banker to the top. These incidents became the basis for the story of Derek's debut in Double Teething Troubles. A total of 19 engines of this class are preserved on various heritage railways around the United Kingdom.

Livery[]

Derek is painted in the BR Deep Bronze green livery. He has yellow warning panels on his front and back ends. He has white lining on his window frames and he has the BR Ferret and Dartboard crest on his sides.

Like Fergus, "The Blue Circle" worked at a cement works, Snodland Cement Works, between 1926 and 1962. It was presented to the Bluebell Railway in April of 1964, but was deemed "too slow" and loaned to a group at Quainton Road in 1997. In 2001 it was officially sold to them, and then later in 2005 to the Chinnor Princes and Risborough Railway. In 2007, it was sold to the Battlefield Line at Shackerston. In January 2015, it then moved to the Rushden, Higham and Wellingborough Railway. After being bought again in 2019, it moved to work on the Nene Valley Railway.

Porter is based on the H.K. Porter 0-6-0ST, built in Butler, Pennsylvania, north of Pittsburgh. These mainly worked in the dockyards on the east coast of the United States. The Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal Railroad, which served the dockyards in Brooklyn, New York, owned several examples of Porter's design, all of which were retired after the railroad started using diesel locomotives in 1963. One of these, B.E.D.T. 15, was rebuilt into an operating replica of Thomas by the Strasburg Railroad in 1998 for use during Day Out with Thomas events throughout the US. Porter appears to be directly based on B.E.D.T. 15 prior to its rebuild. Another engine, 14, is preserved at the Ulster & Delaware Railroad Historical Society in Arkville, New York.
